The tourists buy goods or take tours when going to Dubai, and they have to pay another tax apart from sales tax, which is called value-added tax. What Is Vat, And How Much Vat Do We Have To Pay In The Uae?

Value-added tax (VAT) is the money that is added to the total amount that you have to pay for a product. In 2018, the UAE introduced VAT on the product, which applies to both residents and tourists in the UAE. The current VAT amount in the UAE is 5%

The tourists can get a VAT refund at Dubai Airport only if they have purchased goods from a certified VAT retailer. They can get a refund when leaving the UAE.

VAT Refund Office At DXB Airport

The VAT Refund office is located at Terminal 3. There are different VAT Refund Kiosks located at Terminal 3. The kiosks are self-service, which means you can save time when applying for a refund. 

For people travelling from First class or business class, the VAT refund office is located near the luggage assembly counter. If passengers are travelling via Economy Class, the VAT refund office is located between Terminal 3 Airside, which is close to the security checkpoint.

How To Claim and Collect A VAT Refund at Dubai Airport?

You have to first purchase the goods from a verified retailer, who will scan the goods, and the data will be saved in the database. Then you will validate the goods (as mentioned in the above section)

  • After you have validated the goods, you can collect the refund via kiosks placed in the departure area. 
  • After scanning the goods, you will move to the directed area, submit the documents and recover VAT. 
  • It can be in the form of cash, or you can get the refund on your credit card.

Eligibility Criteria for VAT Refund in the UAE

There is a specific criterion for tourists applying for a VAT refund at Dubai Airport: 

  • Their age must be 18+
  • The goods purchased must be from a registered retailer 
  • The tourist must leave the UAE within 3 months after purchasing goods
  • The minimum purchase amount must be AED 250 to apply for a VAT Tax

Note: The tourists get an 85% tax back as a refund, while 15% goes to a Company named Planet that manufactures and operates a kiosk machine

Note: Passengers leaving from the UAE Seaport can also claim a VAT refund by visiting the tourist refund office or going to a kiosk machine

How to Validate a Purchase and Claim VAT Refund at Dubai Airport?

It is easy to validate a purchase at Dubai Airport; all you need is to visit the validation counters at departures just before the check-in counters. The staff will inspect the goods, and then you will scan the passport/GCC ID at self self-service kiosks. You will get onscreen instructions that you’ll need to follow and then validate your purchase. 

Note: The VAT refund areas at Terminal 1 are at Area 1 and Area 5, at Terminal 2 are near Entrance 1 of the Departure area, and at Terminal 3 are near Entrance 2 and the Business class main entrance.
